2021 Report


The 2021 Report identified and explored eight emerging themes arising from the drivers of change which were likely to concern governments developing employment law and policy, employers adapting to the evolving world of work, and individuals pursuing their careers in the changing landscape. These emerging themes continue to play an important part in shaping the future world of work.

As the world of work continues to evolve in response to global events, this Report explores how these drivers have impacted on these eight emerging themes over the last 12 months and the extent to which they will continue to feature in the years ahead.

12 months’ ago, the 2021 Report identified the following eight emerging themes which were converging to accelerate change since the pandemic began.

  • labour markets were being disrupted around the world
  • regulation and enforcement models were increasingly inadequate to meet the evolving needs of the world of work
  • flexibility and resilience, both at an individual and organisational level, were increasingly accentuated in a fragmented and uncertain world
  • work was playing a vital role in meeting employees’ need for social interaction and a sense of belonging
  • inequality and division was growing and intolerance of inequality and a lack of diversity and discrimination was increasingly evident
  • innovation was playing a greater role in meeting the demands of a changing world of work
